European Adventures: Amsterdam and Brussels

The weekend after Copenhagen, I went to Amsterdam and Brussels. And they were beautiful.

Like Copenhagen, both Amsterdam and Brussels are quieter cities than London. Coming from London, I was unused to the quietness of the cities but it was a nice change.

I arrived in Amsterdam on Friday night and was greeted by bright lights and lively streets. My friends and I touched down in Shipol Airport and travelled by train to Amsterdam Centraal.

Amsterdam is such a nice quiet city. The canals weave in and out of the city. Every so often you would stumble upon another canal lined with trees and flowers and bicycles. Each canal has a personality of its own, with unique shops lining each side of the canal and unique facades. The cool autumn breeze brushed against my cheeks as I walked down the streets. What a wonderful feeling!

The amount of bikers, like in Copenhagen, outnumbers the amount of cars seen on the streets. Amsterdam is a very pedestrian and bike friendly city where bikers usually get the right of way. The streets weren't all that congested with traffic unlike the streets of London.

Amsterdam by night is so beautiful and calm as well. The canals become all lit up and its a spectacular feast for the eyes.

One attraction of Amsterdam is the Heineken Experience. It's so worth the 18 euros! You get to learn about how beer is brewed and learn the history about the beer as well as get a chance to ride the canals of Amsterdam. It was probably one of the best touristy activities that I've done thus far on this trip.

Hello Brussels, Belguim!
This was one spontaneous trip. We were thinking why not? It's right there. So 10 minutes later after we bought our plane tickets to Amsterdam, we bought train tickets to Brussels.

The ever so famous Manekin Pis
It's the most photographed statue in Belgium!

La Grand Place

The Atominium

Brussels is a pretty small city and is definitely walkable. For being the capital of the EU I was so surprised to see how small it actually was. It has a beautiful square, Grand Place, that is completely blocked off to automobiles. In the spring, the square is filled with flowers but right now it was occupied by a flower/plant market. Being the hungry tourists we were, we ate so many Belgian waffles. Oh my they were delicious - a bit sweet but oh so delectable. And who can forget moule frites and Belgian chocolate? Yum!
